Motorcycle Gear Position Sensor

 Ever wonder how a gear position sensor of small bikes look like, photo shown is where it is located. This sensor from a Suzuki Shogun 125cc is located near the front sprocket, the transmission shift of this bike is 1 down 3 up with neutral in the middle of 1st gear and 2nd gear.

 After removing the two screws that hold the sensor on the engine, upon pulling out, you will notice the contact with 4 big circle and 1 small which is the neutral, it works actually by contacting it with ground.
 This is how it looks like after the sensor is remove, notice the single PIN which rotates in accordance with the selected gear and will contact with the dot on the sensor. it can be remove to adjust the tension of the spring to make it stiffer and allow it to contact more with the switch, if u have problems of intermittent like i do this is where the problem exist and not with-in your panel indicators.

Led ANGEL EYES (custom built)

Angel Eyes comes in a variety from flourescent or CCFL type down to LED type. There are numerous homemade version also, and as a DIY'er. I will post one here , from using an ACRYLIC rod bent to a circle form and put a high flux led at both ends to for a circle of light like in the photo as shown, step by step procedure will be documented for all diy'ers.

ACRYLIC rod is very difficult to find at local store, only sheets are. But do you know that those so called VENETIAN BLINDS that some houses use to their windows to block the sun have this kind of rod. :-)

There it is, the clear rod hanging from the blinds. It is actually the rod that they rotate to open and close the blinds.

For the materials and tools that we will be needing to perform this DIY are
1. The rod of course
2. heating element, (HEAT GUN, hot air gun or station) note: do not use any flames on the rod or it will produce bubbles inside that will ruin the rod when lighted
3. Led 2 pcs color of your desire
4 shrinkable tube--more on this later
5. soldering iron and lead
6. pieces of long wire for the leds
7.  2 pcs 1 kohm resistor--to limit the current on the leds when 12 volts is used
8.  mini drill to put holes and rings around the rod
9. cutting disc, drill bits, or any means that can put holes at each edge of the formed rod--later on this one

 Firstly, form the venetian blind acrylic rod to a circle form by using the heat gun, and any means of former like bottle or coffee ceramic cup (what i used), taking precautionary measure not too heat up too close to what i did and get bubbles on the rod that may affect the light output later, shown on the photo is my error.

Secondly, after your circle form, the product must look like this, ( the bubble failure still visible at the top right portion of the ring.










Its time to make way for the LED to be fitted at both ends of the ring, just drill down to a led size as shown, to secure the led at the edge, to make it nice and clean do not use electrical tape, use SHRINKABLE tube, this rubber tube shrink when heated, available at local electronic parts supply stores nationwide or you can get it online.






 I am not actually pleased with the result with a simple effect on the clear tube since a transparent tube will just waste some of the light being emitted by led by passing through on them, so i decided to put some effect on the rod by cutting small lines along the rod as shown.

 now finishing the other led at the edge with limiting current resistor in place must look like this.
and LIGHTS on..

not as flashy like the CCFL type angel eyes but worth a try.

Universal Electronic Signal Flasher for Motorcycles

To use light emitting diode or LED in your motorcycle, ordinary thermal flasher wont work due to the high resistance of led, and that it needs to have a load resistor or dummy load in order to flash leds, which means a power waster.  Many light enthusiast of course didnt understand this that after replacing their signal bulbs to all leds, it didnt blink or blink too fast. Solution, A Universal electronic led flasher.

Figure 1. is a solid state two wire led flasher that will flash even a single led without the use of load resistor. It is so versatile and will prove useful in any number of circumstances. The circuits scales from micro amps to amps and from microseconds to minutes.

The on time may be increased by selecting other values of the 10k ohm resistor of the 2n4401 npn transistor as long as the resulting base current is sufficient to saturate that resistor.

Single phase shunt regulator again.

Motorcycle voltage regulator commonly uses shunt type in order to control the output of the generator. Shunting the winding to ground is easier than controlling the output of the regulator by those series type.

Circuit on the left is still a shunt regulator controlling the windings, with parts easily obtainable from your local electronic supply stores.



CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:

D2 and D1 are the SCR that will control the voltage output of the generator, as the rpm of the engine rises D4 and D5 will convert the AC to DC and shall charge the battery, as the battery is being charged, it is been monitored by Q1, R1, D3 and R4 that comprises the voltage threshold of the entire unit and must be adjusted to 14.4 volts cut off. When the sense circuit seen the voltage rises, Q1 will be turned ON and current will then flow towards the gate of the two SCR turning them on thus shunting the windings not to generate more than needed, protecting the battery from overcharging.

NOTE that this circuit do not have a HEADLIGHT controlling device and or headlight regulator, its for charging battery only on motorcycles with stator.

Installing HAZARD switch

Some bike models especially those commuter bikes often do not have a hazard switch to alert other motorist that you are travelling the road with problem with your bike.

Photo shown is the common block diagram of a turn signal wiring, wherein, when turn signal switch is activated, it will blink the turn signal lights left or right depending on the position of the switch. Front and rear signal lights are just parallel on each side.



More often, riders needs and want to install a HAZARD switch so that when activated will flash all signal lights to alert or inform other motorist to take caution on following you, that maybe you have some sorth of problem and or you are on a convoy.

HAZARD switch is so easy to do if you just follow your own bikes wiring diagram, by taking the common block diagram above only four components will be installed to have a hazard signal function.

  • normally open push button switch
  • 2 pcs of rectifier diode (ex: 1n4002)
  • 3 pcs of stranded wire, prefer #18 AWG
  • and an electronic flasher like on this link universal led flasher for leds or bulbs

The turn signal flasher on the block diagram will be replaced by your electronic flasher, aftermarket and or the DIY mentioned, and just follow the add on components, and voila, you have now a hazard function. no need for rewiring your old system.
