Half Wave Stator to Full wave

We all know that small bikes charging system is made up of only a Half wave ac to dc conversion thus making it impossible for the system to give enough juice out from the stator to charge batteries at low rpm...To compensate for a FULL WAVE rectifier be installed on this system, we need to do some modifying to the stator,

the picture shown uses the stock configuration of a Half Wave system with an AC lighting coil present for headlight connection center tapped to the whole winding of the stator. One end of the coil is connected to chassis ground. I order for this system to give way for a FULL WAVE rectifier, the grounding system must be omitted and center tapped connection for headlight must be removed as shown on the next picture below.





the headlight will be redirected to the battery by cutting the yellow line of the AC lighting coil from the Stock regulator/rectifier, so that the headlight ON off switch as well as the HI/LOW system will still be used without any rewiring that headlight path.







ADVANTAGES of this system than the latter.

with full wave regulation you have almost twice usable dc power (and cleaner) than with half wave
last , cleaner regulation with the sens wire, if well used, it deliver more power if their is a drop (big consumption) than the other fixed simplier one where lighting often drop
and better protection for you electronic again drop or over charge

  2. hi estregan, if you convert your half wave stator to full wave you cannot use the stock regulator because one end of the stator winding is grounded to chassis...you need to isolate that ground by removing it internally then conevrting it as one of your terminal, so you'll be having two AC terminal rather than just one with half wave...lighting coil will be omitted, this is the center tap of the winding...

  4. Estregan, full wave regulator can be found on 150cc GY6 engine...dink, joyride, or any other 150cc scooter uses full wave regulation..so if you buy a regulator...ask for those mentioned above...

    again you need to determine is if your stator is grounded to the engine block or not.

  7. Hi I know this post is a bit old, but would like to try anyway.
    I plan to fullwave my stator but my question is, is there really a need to put the lighting (headlight and stuff) rewired/connected to battery after doing fullwave to stator?

    If I am not to rewire the lighting to the battery and only worked on the stator and changed the regulator to fullwave what would likely to happen?

    if you will not re route your headlight to the battery path then you will have no HEADLIGHT, you simply cannot tap anything on the stator AC winding since it was already disconnected to ground and one of your Bulb terminals is always connected to Ground. You are just messing with the FULL WAVE system.

    If u want more answers, Just differentiate both system. There are many articles about AC regulations.

  9. Hey! I want to convert my bike to full wave but my problem is that the whole stator is one isolated piece so I cant disconnect the coils ground. Can I leave it grounded and ground a full wave r/r too?

  10. Half wave system do not isolate one end to ground. If you want to make it a full wave, you really need to remove the end of the coil from the ground connection because it will be redirected to one point of the bridge rectifier diode. Sounds too technical but there are lots of information about half and full regarding diode or RECTIFIER connection that will convert AC voltage to DC voltage.

  11. I have a cup that I guess came full wave from the factory, has a full wave r/r on it already, the stator went up, lost fire. I have it running but can't find a stator to work right with it , blew headlights and no charge battery can I modify my stator to full wave ?

  12. Hi i'm reading a lot to convert my vespa px200 from half wave AC to Full wave DC.... I'm trying with my lml star Deluxe first... I'm already convert the stator from half to Full wave isolating the ground end of coil to a NEW wire... My ask,.. My Reg/Rec (original ducati) have 5 terminal: black ground, red/white tagged +B from Switched DC, red tagged B to +DC battery terminal and two tagged G one yellow from stator and one grey out to light's loom..... Can I use the same reg /Rec conecting both stator'wire (old and NEW) each to a G terminals???

  14. HALF WAVE can easily be distinguish when you have a HEADLIGHT that brights with the engine RPM. as simple as that. FULL WAVE system do not have an AC output to power any of your LIGHT BULBS..all of them are connected to DC (battery)

  16. Hi, any benefits of converting to full wave for led headlights? I have wired all my lights to DC and only taking 20w or less. The old ac lighting circuit has nothing to do now.

      The only benefit you can get with full wave system is making your headlight stay steady even if the RPM is low. You need to calculate both the converted headlights to DC and the tail light current consumption when both are on. Here in my country, I recommend to replace the Tail Light bulb to LED type to minimize the current DRAW of your new DC headlight to your battery.

    2. Hi, all lights on the bike is led now, includes the 9/18w headlight and a very tiny tail light. the ac circuit has nothing on it anymore, does this means all the extra electricity that used to supply to the old headlight will be shunted and wasted as heat?

If you didn't change and convert your stator to FULL WAVE as shown and still using the existing HALF WAVE or original configuration then YES, the AC that supply the original bulb got nothing to do and you'll overheat the regulator making it to FAIL in due time. The HALF WAVE REGLATOR has two regulation inside..One is for charging and one is for your AC headlight before. But the AC COIL that powers your original bulb was also the one that charges your battery. You need to configure that AC GENERATING COIL (STATOR) to full wave system and incorporate a FULL WAVE REGULATOR to maximize the current output of that generator as one full charging coil and not JUST HALF.

  18. the end of winding wire formerly connected to ground is now connected to yello wire is connected to lighting port of full wave regulator and the another end of winding wire is connected to charging port of fullwave regulator
